The Nancy Carter Collection spans the years 1965 to 1970, and includes undated materials. The collection is divided into three series. Series I: Chuck Boyd Digital Files consists of digital images and videos originally taken by prominent rock photographer Chuck Boyd. The images depict concerts, press conferences, and other music-related events in California. Artists include The Animals, Buffalo Springfield, Canned Heat, Cream, Donovan, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas and the Papas, The Rolling Stones, Sonny & Cher, and The Who; venues include Beverly Hills Hotel, Fillmore West, Hollywood Bowl, Kaleidoscope, Monterey Pop Festival, Newport Pop Festival, Santa Clara Pop Festival, Shrine Expo, Valley Music Center, and Whisky a Go-Go. The series also contains images of the Tapia Park Love-in in Malibu, CA, Civil Rights demonstrations at the University of California, Berkeley, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s memorial at the LA Coliseum. Series II: Printed Materials contains papers related to Carter's unpublished memoir, including a draft transcription, annotated table of contents, book proposal, and certificate of registration with the Writers Guild of America, as well as a photocopy of the liner notes she contributed to in the 2022 vinyl release "Sons of Adam - Saturday's Sons." Series III: Photographs contains a number of black-and-white and color photographs of Carter and musical personalities including Dave Clark, The Hollies, and Rodney Bingenheimer. The Nancy Carter Collection presents a rich depiction of the California rock music and counterculture scene during the late 1960s.
Biography / Administrative History
Nancy Carter was born in Los Angeles in 1937 and studied history as a graduate student at the University of Southern California in 1964. While at USC, she wrote a thesis on the emerging counterculture and subsequently found her way into the rock music scene in and around LA. She became close friends with many prominent musicians and came to know the photographer Chuck Boyd, with whom she formed a decade-long creative relationship.
