- Scope and ContentsThe John Gibson Audio Recordings span the years 1967 to 1975 and includes some undated materials. The collection is split into two series based on subject: materials related to the 1975 radio program "The California Special" and audio interviews by Gibson and colleagues during his time at Atlantic Records. Within each series, the materials are arranged by format and then alphabetically by person. Artists and executives featured include Lou Adler, David Cassidy, Micky Dolenz, Ahmet Ertegun, Nesuhi Ertegun, Glenn Frey, Carole King, Mike Love, Ray Manzarek, Roger McGuinn, Huey Meaux, Michelle Phillips, Stephen Sholes, Phil Spector, Elmer Valentine, Hy Weiss, Brian Wilson, and Frank Zappa. The collection provides insight into the popular music scene, particularly in Southern California, during the early 1970s.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryJohn Gibson was born in 1946 in Los Angeles. After graduating from the UCLA School of Theater, Television and Film in 1969, Gibson worked at The Hollywood Reporter and Record World Magazine as a columnist and at Atlantic Records as a producer. In 1974, he began working for radio stations in Southern California, and he conducted interviews for and helped produce the radio documentaries "The History of Rock & Roll," "The Motown Story," and "The California Special." Gibson later became a television news reporter for local California stations like KCRA before becoming a correspondent and anchor for NBC News, MSNBC, and the Fox News Channel.
