- Biography / Administrative HistoryThe Fillmore West and Winterland Ballroom were historic music venues in San Francisco, California, made famous by concert promoter Bill Graham. The Avalon Ballroom featured shows promoted by Robert Cohen, Chet Helms and his company Family Dog Productions. All venues were important to the development of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Named after Graham's original "Fillmore" location at the intersection of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard, the Fillmore West (1968-1971) stood at Market Street and South Van Ness Avenue. In 1966, Graham began to rent the Winterland Ballroom (1966-1978) for larger concerts the Fillmore couldn't accommodate. The Avalon Ballroom was a music venue in the Polk Gulch neighborhood of San Francisco, California, on Sutter Street. After closing in 1969, it had a brief reopening from 2003 to 2005.
