Biography / Administrative History
Chrissie Hynde is an American musician, songwriter, and founding member of the rock band the Pretenders. After studying at Kent State University, Hynde relocated to London in the early 1970s, where she became active in the emerging punk and new wave scenes. In 1978, she formed the Pretenders, serving as the group’s lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and only consistent member. Over the following decades, Hynde guided the band through multiple lineups and stylistic evolutions. Beyond her work with the Pretenders, Hynde is known for her advocacy of animal rights and vegetarianism. She co-founded the vegetarian restaurant VegiTerranean in her hometown of Akron, Ohio. Chrissie Hynde was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders.
Scope and Contents
The Terry Hynde Collection on Chrissie Hynde spans 1975 to 2010 and includes undated material. The bulk of the collection consists of northeast Ohio, U.S., and U.K. press clippings and complete periodicals documenting Chrissie Hynde’s life, career, and work with the Pretenders. Also included in the collection are posters, Pretenders tour itineraries, and undated snapshots of Hynde at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary award. Family correspondence (not to or from Chrissie Hynde) provides additional personal context.
Materials related to Hynde’s former husband, Jim Kerr of Simple Minds, are also present, including a 1988 calendar, tour program, and an Amnesty International brochure. This collection will be of particular interest to researchers studying Chrissie Hynde, the Pretenders, and women’s roles in the development of punk and new wave music. The large collection of publications and clippings, in particular, provide valuable insight into the ways women artists were represented and discussed in mainstream and alternative media across multiple decades. The collection is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
