Scope and Contents
Series I: Artist and Subject Files, 34.86 linear feet, contains promotional and concert photographs for primarily national touring acts. A majority of the photographs are promotional, black-and-white 8" x 10" images sent out by the artist's record label. However, there are many files that include photographs taken at concerts when the artist or band came to Cleveland. These materials are noted in the file title, after the artist's name. The photographer is often credited on the reverse (a prominent example being Linda Woods, who worked for Scene), but other information about the show is not consistently provided. A search within the finding aid for the phrase "concert photos" will help researchers find these files. The series is arranged alphabetically by artist name, with general folders (e.g., A-Al) found at the beginning of each set of letters. These general folders were maintained by Scene and include photographs for all artists that did not receive a separate folder. Some of these artists became more popular in the years to follow, such as Fall Out Boy, which makes these general folders worth looking through if there is no folder for the artist in question. Other artists included in the general folders are those who were members of bands and went on to release solo albums, such as Chris Mars of the Replacements, or Dee Dee King of the Ramones. Many different genres are represented throughout the series, with the general folders including a lot of rhythm and blues and hip hop artists.
