Biography / Administrative History
James Pankow is a trombone player and best known as a founding member of Chicago. Pankow with two other students from DePaul formed the band The Big Thing in 1967. In addition to playing the trombone, Pankow also composed many songs for Chicago and the brass arrangements.
Considered by many critics to be one of the most successful rock bands of all time, Chicago originally formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois as The Big Thing, changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority, and finally settled on Chicago. Their goal was to create a rock and roll band featuring a brass section and their music blended classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Chicago had a steady stream of hits and continues to be one of the longest-running rock bands. Chicago was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
