Scope and Contents
The Cindy Barber Collection on Beachland Ballroom and Tavern spans the dates 1999-2018 with undated materials and contains four posters and approximately 366 GB of digitized artist files, concert flyers, and set lists (4,090 digital images) generated and collected by the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, a live music venue located in Cleveland, Ohio. Artist files make up the bulk of the collection and include artist contracts, stage layouts, promotional materials, and correspondence primarily between artist management and the Beachland Ballroom staff. Concert flyers document musical acts both national and native to Northeast Ohio. The collection details entertainment business transactions from the perspective of both artist and venue management, as well as providing insight into the diverse music scene in Northeast Ohio with concert ephemera relating to rock, blues, jazz, funk, soul, R&B, and afro-centric musical groups.
Biography / Administrative History
The Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, a live music venue located at 15711 Waterloo Rd. in Cleveland, Ohio, opened to the public on March 2, 2000 by co-owners Cindy Barber and Mark Leddy. Constructed in 1950 as the Croatian Liberty Home, the building stands in the North Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland known traditionally by locals as “Beachland,” in reference to an amusement park that operated in the area from 1894 to 1969. After arriving in the mid-1980s, Barber and other members of the area created an initiative known as the “Lakeshore Neighbors,” a group dedicated to the preservation of the Collinwood neighborhood and to the establishment of a local arts and entertainment-focused community. In 2000 she bought the old Croatian Liberty Hall with the intention of preserving details of the original gathering space, and together with partner Mark Leddy, converted it into what is now the iconic Beachland Ballroom and Tavern. The venue, consisting of ballroom and stage with 500-person capacity and a smaller tavern and stage (including back bar and kitchen) with 148-person capacity, currently hosts both local and national musical acts, participates in community events, and serves as a cornerstone of the Waterloo Arts and Entertainment District of Cleveland.
