Biography / Administrative History
Rock the Vote is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage and build the political power of young people. It was founded in 1990 by music executives as a response to censorship of rap and hip-hop artists. It is focused on increasing voter turnout among voters ages 18 to 24 and is known for its celebrity spokespeople and partnership with MTV.
Scope and Contents
The Seth Matlin "Rock the Vote" Collection spans 1994 to 1999 and contains undated materials. The collection has two series: Series I: Subject Files and Series II: Posters. Series I: Subject Files consist of a press kit, voters brochures and guides, pledge cards and voter registration forms, ads, and CDs and VHS compilations of PSA announcements. Series II: Posters consists of five posters advertising "Rock the Vote."
