Biography / Administrative History
Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist and guitarist James Hatfield. The band brought the underground thrash metal scene to the mainstream. In the 1980’s it amassed a rabid fanbase and landed a major label record deal without radio or MTV support. Influenced by early heavy metal and hard rock bands, Metallica’s early releases contained fast tempos, harmonized leads, and deliberate arrangements. The band took on an increasingly aggressive approach and lyrics dealt with personal and socially conscious issues. In 1991, Metallica found commercial success and mainstream appeal by streamlining its music to feature sinewy, well-produced and introspective hard rock that was a nearly clean break from their '80s output. Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
