Scope and Contents
The Bobby Briggs Collection of Sam Cooke Picture Sleeves is dated from 1960 to 1965. The collection consists of seven 45 rpm picture sleeves and one compact 33 picture sleeve of Sam Cooke releases. The collection is arranged alphabetically by release name. The collections provides insight into Cooke's career and the marketing of his releases.
Biography / Administrative History
Sam Cooke (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964) was an American singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist known to be the definitive soul singer. Cooke was the lead vocalist for the Soul Stirrers from 1950 to 1956 before recording his first pop song "Lovable" as a soloist. He had a successful solo career within a variety of styles including pop, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. Cooke also establised himself as a successful, groundbreaking black entrepreneur within the mainstream music industry. He produced records for other artists, founded his own publishing company, Kags Music, and launched a record label, Sar/Derby. Sam Cooke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
