Biography / Administrative History
The Northeast Ohio Jazz Society (NOJS) was founded in 1977 for the promotion and appreciation of jazz music. The organization’s initial efforts focused on concerts and a newsletter, Jazz Central. In 1980, NOJS collaborated with Cuyahoga Community Collection to launch the Tri-C Jazz Fest. Additional programming included jazz appreciation for Northeast Ohio elementary and middle schools, and the publication of the book, Cleveland Jazz History. In the early 2000s, the organization created the “Jazz Elders” documentary, which featured local jazz artists such as Dolores Morgan, Andy Anderson, Willie Smith, and William “Shep” Shepherd. NOJS dissolved in 2007.
