- Scope and ContentsThe Swingos Collection documents the hotel and restaurants owned and operated by Jim Swingos in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1970s. It contains photographs, color negatives, menus from Swingos' restaurants, and a file for Elvis Presley's 1974 tour stop in Cleveland. The materials are arranged alphabetically by format.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryIn 1967, Jim Swingos bought the lease to operate the Keg and Quarter, a restaurant located in Cleveland's Downtowner Hotel. He successfully turned the restaurant into one of Cleveland's fine dining establishments, and in 1971 he bought the rest of the hotel at Euclid and East 18th Street. With the restaurant already attracting celebrities that came to town, he changed the name of the hotel to Swingos Celebrity Hotel, and renovated the rooms so that each one had a theme. Throughout the 1970s the hotel was a popular stop for touring rock bands, and it was featured in this context in the film Almost Famous. The hotel is currently operated by Comfort Inn.
