Scope and Contents
The Bayou: DC's Killer Joint Collection contains the source material for a documentary film by the same name. The materials date from 1916 through 2012, and include some undated items. The collection is split into two series: papers and photographs, and audiovisual materials. The primary focus of the collection is the Bayou's years as a rock and roll nightclub, but there is some information about the music it hosted prior to 1965.
Biography / Administrative History
The Bayou nightclub in Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) was a rock, blues, pop, and reggae club. The Bayou was a stop on the national tours for midrange musical groups and solo artists. The club hosted late-twentieth century bands such as Foreigner, U2, the Dave Matthews Band, New Orleans Radiators, Hootie and the Blowfish, Kiss, the Tom-Tom Club, and other artists that influenced the evolution of rock and rhythm and blues from the 1960s through the 1990s. The club opened in 1939 and originally featured Dixieland jazz until 1965 when it changed to a rock format. The club closed on December 31, 1998, and was demolished the following year. In 2013 Metro Teleproductions, Inc. (MTI) released a 90-minute documentary on the club, entitled The Bayou: DC's Killer Joint. The documentary was Emmy-nominated for the category of Best Documentary - Historical.
