- Biography / Administrative HistoryElvis Costello, born Declan Patrick MacManus on August 25,1954, is an English singer-songwriter and musician. The son of British bandleader Ross McManus, Costello worked as a computer programmer during the early 1970s, performing under the name D.P. Costello in various folk clubs. His remarkable career kicked into gear in 1976 when he was signed to Stiff Records, which resulted in his 1977 debut album, My Aim is True. Soon after, Costello assembled the Attractions, who would back him on many albums throughout his career. Costello's career in song has been almost unmatched in its reach--from furious, biting punk-era nuggets to art-minded collaborations with an opera singer and string quartet--and its consistency.
