- Scope and ContentsThe Beverly Ross Collection documents Ross' work as a Brill Building songwriter in the 1950s, and in the late 1960s as a staff writer for Kama Sutra Records. The paper materials include her contract with Kama Rippa Music, Inc., copyright registration forms, lead sheets (some annotated), and sheet music. These items are arranged alphabetically by format and title. A copy of her detailed inventory is available upon request. Ross' collection provides insight to the work of popular music composers during the 1950s and 1960s.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryBeverly Ross is an American songwriter known for her work at the Brill Building in 1950s New York. Her first hit song was "Dim Dim the Lights (I Want Some Atmosphere)," performed by Bill Haley and His Comets in 1955. Other hits followed, including "Lollipop" by the Chordettes in 1958, two for Elvis Presley, and "Candyman," sung by Roy Orbison in 1961. In the early 1960s, however, Ross left the music scene after an incident with Phil Spector. She returned to the business in 1969 as a staff writer for Kama Sutra Records, where she also found success writing commercials for the advertising agency Young and Rubican. In 2013 she published an autobiography titled, I Was the First Woman Phil Spector Killed!
