Scope and Contents
The Henry Niedzwiecki Audio Recording of Alan Freed contains the beginning of Alan Freed's radio show from March 22, 1952 with a running time of approximately 38 minutes. The show starts with Alan Freed explaining what happened the previous night at the first Moondog Coronation Ball, when 25,000 people showed up for the show at a venue with a capacity of only 10,000. The show was shut down, and Freed begins his show the next day refuting rumors that the show was over sold and that he was the organizer of the show. When Freed has finished explaining what happened at the show the night before, he begins his radio show as usual.
Biography / Administrative History
Disk jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with coining the term "rock and roll" to describe the uptempo black rhythm and blues records he played as early as 1951 on Cleveland radio station WJW. In 1952, Freed was one of the people responsible for the Moondog Coronation Ball, a Cleveland concert that is now considered by many to be the first rock and roll concert. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
