- Scope and ContentsThe Photographs of Jan and Dean is dated 1989. The collection contains 20 negatives and 44 images of Jan and Dean at the pool. The collection is arranged by format.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryThe American rock duo Jan and Dean consisted of William Jan Berry and Dean Ormsby Torrence and formed in the early 1960s. The duo were part of the evolution of California Sound and surf music popularized by the Beach Boys. Torrence and Berry formed Jan and Dean in 1959 after Torrence returned from conscripted service in the Army Reserves. The duo split their time between writing and recording music, and attending college. Jan and Dean hit their peak in the mid-1960s with surf craze music and collaborations with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Jan was left with partial paralysis and aphasia after a car accident and after his recovery the duo continued to perform and tour until Jan’s death in 2004.
