The Frank Hebblethwaite Collection on Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band is a comprehensive collection that documents the psychedelic rock group as well as the artistic career of Don Van Vliet. There are five series that separate the collection by format: audiovisual materials, gallery publications, photographs, posters, and research and ephemera.
Biography / Administrative History
Captain Beefheart was the stage name of Don Van Vliet, an American musician and artist. With the Magic Band, Captain Beefheart was active from 1964 to 1982, when he stopped performing and recording to focus on painting. The owner of a remarkable four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics, and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music, and rock and roll to create a singular body of work. While he never came even remotely close to mainstream success, Beefheart's impact can be found in punk, new wave, and post-rock. He passed away in 2010.
