- Biography / Administrative HistoryCKLW is a 50,000 watt AM radio station in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, which is across the Detroit River from Detroit, Michigan. The "LW" stands for "London" and "Windsor," the two largest Canadian cities that were within CKLW's listening area when the station first went on the air in the 1930s. By the mid-1960s, a more powerful signal allowed CKLW to be heard in both the United States and Canada, and on some nights the broadcast reached the Eastern seaboard. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, CKLW followed the "Boss Radio" format developed by Bill Drake, which helped it earn a ranking as the most listened to radio station in North America from 1967-1973. The "Big 8" name is a reference to its spot on the dial, at 800 kHz.
