Scope and Contents
The Collection on the Woodstock and Mountaindale Festivals documents two music festivals that did not go as planned. The collection consists of three items: a brochure for Woodstock at its original location of Wallkill, NY; an issue of the Times Herald Record from August 16, 1969; and a program for the Mountaindale Festival, which was scheduled for July 11, 1970. The collection is arranged chronologically.
Biography / Administrative History
The Woodstock Festival was held from August 15-18, 1969, on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in the town of Bethel, New York. The original site of the festival was a park in Wallkill, New York, but town officials had the concert banned a month beforehand. The change in venue ultimately forced Woodstock's organizers to open up the festival free of charge.
The Mountaindale Festival was created in the aftermath of Woodstock, in nearby Mountaindale, New York, with the goal of providing concerts six days a week in July and August 1970. However, a day before the scheduled opening of July 11, 1970, a local court blocked the festival from operating.
