Biography / Administrative History
The Winter Dance Party was a music tour that played across the Midwest in the winter of 1959. The tour featured Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and Dion and the Belmonts. On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, with pilot Roger Peterson while traveling to a venue in Moorhead, Minnesota.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one program dated February 2, 1959, for the Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Dion and the Belmonts at the Winter Dance Party, Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake, Iowa. The Surf Ballroom was the last venue Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens played at before dying in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.
