Biography / Administrative History
The Grateful Dead was at the center of the counterculture, psychedelic rock era in the 1960s. The band was formed in San Francisco, California in 1965 and in the early years, were known to travel with writer Ken Kesey and perform during LSD centered Acid Tests, were they gained loyal followers known as Deadheads. The first few albums were known for freewheeling and improv until the group received harmonizing lessons from Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, which resulted in a more structured, laid-back, country album. After a brief break in the early 1970s, the original group would continued to travel in perform through the 1980s. As of 2017, the group Dead & Company are still touring with original band members, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann.
