Biography / Administrative History
George V. Voinovich was mayor of Cleveland from 1980-1989, governor of Ohio from 1991-1998, and United States senator from 1999-2011. During Voinovich's tenure as mayor, Cleveland was chosen as the permanent location for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
Scope and Contents
The Senator George V. Voinovich Collection documents the selection of Cleveland as the location for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The collection contains four photographs and one poster: the groundbreaking for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, featuring Voinovich and Cleveland mayor Michael White; Voinovich and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner posing with shovels (this photograph is autographed by Wenner); Voinovich and Ahmet Ertegun at a press conference, presumably announcing Cleveland as the location for the museum; and Voinovich with former Ohio governor Richard Celeste. The poster commemorates the date of the groundbreaking: June 7, 1993.
