Biography / Administrative History
After occupying all five of the top positions on Billboard's Top Forty during the week of April 4, 1964, it didn't seem possible that the Beatles' popularity could soar even higher, but soar it did with the release of their anarchic Marx Brothers-as-rock-stars documentary film, A Hard Day's Night. The plot is a study of a day in the life of the Beatles, beginning with them running from their adoring fans to catch a train. Every plot point circles around the band getting to a television show in order to perform a live concert, and within this stream of action is a series of slapstick and other funny zaniness. The whole thing ends with an ear-shattering concert, and the band yet again running from the adoring fans. The film was produced by Walter Shenson, and directed by Richard Lester. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Music, Adaptation or Treatment (George Martin) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay (Alun Owen). It was nominated for a Grammy in Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Show (John Lennon, Paul McCartney); and all four Beatles were nominated for an award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles.
