- Scope and ContentsThe Joe Smith Papers span the years 1947 to 1999, with the bulk of the collection dating between 1980 and 1999. The collection consists of six types of material: appointment books, telephone logs, correspondence, office files, notepads, and graphic materials. The collection focuses mainly on Smith's research for his book, Off the Record, but there are also several items of note in that relate to Smith's early career as a disk jockey.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryA graduate of Yale University, Joe Smith worked as a sportscaster and disk jockey before entering the music business. By 1970, he had worked his way up to president of Warner Brothers Records, working with artists such as the Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Peter Paul and Mary, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, and James Taylor. Smith went on to become Chairman of Elektra / Asylum Records and later President and CEO of Home Sports Entertainment and later Capitol / EMI Music.

1961: Moves to California and begins working as National Promotion Manager for Warner Brothers Records.
1975: Becomes Chairman of Elektra/Asylum Records.
1989: Publishes <title render="italic">Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music</title>.
