The Joe Reiling Papers span the years 1985-1992, 2008 and include some undated material. The Papers contain documents related to Reiling's career as a disc jockey and includes photographs and reproductions of photographs; documents of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service Programming Center; newspaper clippings on Reiling and the Armed Forces Radio Network; biographical information; advertisement copy; and radio production sheets. Personalities featured in the photographs include Los Angeles Lakers' forward Michael Cooper, B.B. King, Steve Martin, Scotty Moore, Lee Oskar, Elvis Presley, Joey Ramone, Joe Reiling, Carlos Santana, Ringo Starr, Supertramp, and George Thorogood. The Papers provide a glimpse into the life and career of radio disc jockeys.
Biography / Administrative History
Joe Reiling is an American radio personality and disc jockey. He was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He attended the University of Dayton in 1970, and, while pursuing his communications degree, he worked at the school's commercially operated progressive rock station in news, as a disc jockey and talk show host. Upon graduating in 1974, Reiling moved to Fresno,California, where he continued to mix his on-air work as both a disc jockey and news director at the progressive rock station, KFIG-FM. In 1977, Reiling was hired by KLOS-FM in Los Angeles. While in L.A., Reiling also worked at other radio stations, including KMET-FM. In addition to his radio work, he has been the host of several syndicated programs and spent nearly 10 years with the American Forces Network (AFN, formerly Armed Forces Radio and Television Services, AFRTS), heard on both land and at sea to an estimated audience of nearly 400 million listeners around the world. Reiling later became involved in the managing, producing, and programming of inflight audio entertainment for many domestic and international airlines and Air Force One.
