Scope and Contents
The Cousin Brucie Morrow Papers span the years of 1959 to 2010, and consist mainly of photographs and clippings, chronicling Bruce Morrow's career as a popular radio disc jockey, known as "Cousin Brucie." Also included in the collection are press releases from various radio stations where Morrow worked (including WCBS and WABC), fan club files, awards, and some audiovisual recordings of his work. Morrow's papers provide documentation on the impact of radio disc jockeys on the history of rock music, and a behind-the-scenes look at being a media personality in the rock music industry.
Biography / Administrative History
Bruce Morrow was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 13, 1937. He began his career in radio shortly after graduating from New York University. Morrow adopted the moniker "Cousin Brucie" in 1959, while working at WINS / New York. He left WINS for Miami radio in 1961 before returning to WABC / New York, where he broadcast for 13 years. During his time at WABC, Morrow was known for hosting the famous Palisades Park rock concerts. Morrow moved to WNBC / New York, where he spent two years on radio and television before leaving to concentrate on business ventures. In the 1980s, Morrow returned to radio, joining the staff of WCBS-FM / New York. From 1987 to 1993, Morrow was heard nationally on the weekly series, <title render="italic">Cruisin' America</title>. Morrow's autobiography, titled <title render="italic">Cousin Brucie!</title>, was published in 1987. His voice can be heard in the films <title render="italic">Across the Universe</title>, <title render="italic">Gas Pump Girls</title>, and <title render="italic">Dirty Dancing</title>, in which he also had a small acting role. He currently hosts two weekly programs for WCBS and Sirius XM satellite radio, <title render="italic">Cousin Brucie's Yearbook</title> and <title render="italic">Cousin Brucie's Saturday Night Oldies Party</title>. Bruce Morrow was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988.
