Biography / Administrative History
James Fortune began taking photographs as a college student in the 1960s, when he had the chance to shoot a then-unknown band called the Doors. During the 1960s and 1970s, he photographed other rock and roll icons, such as Bee Gees, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, and countless others. His catalog of over 15,000 images from the 1960s and 1970s contains shots of everything from hippie riots in Hollywood to Gene Simmons and Cher sharing an eclair; from Presidents Carter and Nixon to images from his 1968-1970 tour of duty with the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group.
