- Scope and ContentsThe Hal Blaine Papers span the years 1959 to 2000 and include some undated material. The collection consists of Blaine's appointment books, a session journal, a cash book, an address book, membership cards, a business card, and a promotional poster. Artists of note in the collection include Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, Doris Day, the Fifth Dimension, and Phil Spector. The collection documents the rigorous schedules kept by session musicians and, more specifically, illustrates Blaine's contributions to iconic rock and roll productions. The Hal Blaine Papers are arranged with Blaine's appointment books first in chronological order, followed by the other books, and the cards. The poster is stored separately due to its size.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryHal Blaine was one of the most utilized recording session drummers in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s, playing drums on a multitude of recordings, from the Wall of Sound productions of Phil Spector to Brian Wilson's productions of the Beach Boys. Blaine can also be heard on many notable recordings by pop / rock performers in Los Angeles from the 1960s, including those of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Blaine published a memoir, <title render="italic">Hal Blaine & The Wrecking Crew</title>, in 1990.
