Scope and Contents
The Custom Coach Records consist of the production records for Johnny Cash's tour bus "JC Unit One" that was custom-designed for Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, in 1980. The records include the original blue prints, modification specifications, notes, operation manuals, and photographs; as well as information on the Custom Coach company itself. The records provide insight into the lifestyle of a touring musician and its effects on the creation of a custom-made tour bus. Files are arranged by alphabetically by title. Folder contents are arranged chronologically where possible, except for the tour bus design blueprints, which are organized by size.
Biography / Administrative History
Custom Coach is a specialty vehicles company located in Columbus, Ohio. They produce custom-built vehicles, such as tour buses, and commercial vehicles for police, medical professionals, and security personnel. Formed in 1955, Custom Coach has designed tour buses for a number of musicians, including Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and Loretta Lynn. Other celebrity clients include Muhammad Ali, Clint Eastwood, and John Madden.
