- Scope and ContentsThe Gold Star Recording Studios Records consist of documents and recordings related to the operation of the studio, which was most active during the 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes a lease for the studio, as well as records of business transactions, recording session log sheets, audio recordings, and architectural plans for the studios and its control rooms. The records provide insight to the operation of an independent recording studio. The architectural plans are especially noteworthy, as the special construction of the studios and equipment made possible Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" technique.
- Biography / Administrative HistoryGold Star Recording Studios was founded by David Gold and Stan Ross in 1950 as an independent alternative to the commercial recording studios of the day. The studio, located at 6252 Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, was in operation until 1984, and recorded dozens of noteworthy artists including Herb Alpert, The Beach Boys, Eddie Cochran, Lovin' Spoonful, Tina Turner, Ritchie Valens, and Neil Young. Gold Star's unique 20 x 20-foot echo chambers and custom-built recording equipment were instrumental in the development of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound technique.
