Scope and Contents
The Immaculate Funk Collection (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Collection) consists of 74 Beta SP videocassettes and 28 interview transcripts, dating from 1996 to 1999, and presumably used by FBN Productions' President Tom Thurman in his documentary film, Immaculate Funk: The Jerry Wexler Story. The Immaculate Funk Collection documents the influence of Jerry Wexler on the development of mainstream rhythm & blues. Whether it was his insistence on scrapping the "race records" tag for vintage soul music in favor of the more accepted "rhythm and blues" title, or his use of the largely white Muscle Shoals team as support on Aretha Franklin's career-defining hits, Wexler is viewed as an avid music enthusiast who shattered color boundaries in music at a time when race relations in this country were reaching a boiling point. The interviewees, including Solomon Burke, Ray Charles, Ahmet Ertegun, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Willie Nelson, John Prine, and Henry Stone--just to name a few--present a collective attitude towards Wexler of solid respect.
