Alan di Perna is an American rock journalist and author. He has written for a number of music periodicals including Billboard, Creem, Musician, Rolling Stone, Grammy.com, Music Aficionado, Keyboard, Guitar Player, Guitar Aficionado, Guitarist and Rock & Folk. He has been a contributing editor of Guitar World since the late 1980s and is an annual contributor to the Grammy Program Book that accompanies the Grammy Award ceremony. He has interviewed dozens of prominent musicians, including Keith Richards, B.B. King, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Prince, Pete Townshend, Quincy Jones, Baba Maal, McCoy Tyner, Buddy Guy, Yoko Ono, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Tom Petty, Johnny Rotten, Pete Seeger, Ringo Starr, Stanley Clarke, Ziggy Marley, Dr. John and Frank Zappa. Di Perna has also written liner notes for CD releases such as Santana Live at the Fillmore 1968 (Columbia Legacy) and Heavy Metal Hits of the 80s Volumes I and III (Rhino Records 1996) as well as authored several books including Play it Loud: an Epic History of the Style, Sound, & Revolution of the Electric Guitar, Guitar Masters: Intimate Portraits and Fender Classic Moments.

The Alan di Perna Collection spans the years 1983 to 2016 and includes some undated materials. The collection consists of physical and digital materials used by di Perna in his research and writing, and it is organized by format into four series: Artist Files, Audio Recordings, Transcripts, and Digital Materials. The bulk of the collection contains the artist files and audio recordings of di Perna's interviews with dozens of artists. Artists featured include, but are not limited to, AC/DC, Lou Adler, Aerosmith, Jeff Beck, Black Crowes, Jack Casady, Ray Charles, Alice Cooper, David Crosby, David Gilmour, Green Day, Courtney Love, Tom Morello, No Doubt, Britney Spears, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pet Shop Boys, Tom Petty, Liz Phair, Joey Ramone, Lou Reed, Ravi Shankar, Rolling Stones, Steve Vai, Yes, Frank Zappa, and ZZ Top. Taken as a whole, the collection provides insight into di Perna's research process and the general work involved in being a music journalist. In addition, the audio interviews offer a close look into the relationship between the journalist and the artist as well as a personal window into those artists' experiences at the time of recording.
