Scope and Contents
The Collection on Ricky Vac and the Rock-a-Ways contains an unmarked audiocassette recording of Ricky Vac and Rock-a-Ways, a 2005 calendar from the Berea Historical Society that features a photograph of the Rock-a-Ways, a copy of Cruisin' Times Magazine, two retrospective press clippings on the band, a photocopy of the 45rpm single "Colleen," and a handpainted poster with a photograph attached advertising a Rock-a-Ways show. The collection also contains a CD-R of image files of the presentation of collection materials to President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Terry Stewart and members of the Curatorial division. The collection provides insights to the career of the group, one of the first integrated rock and roll bands and a hit on Cleveland's airwaves from the mid-1950s to early-1960s.
Biography / Administrative History
Popular in their hometown of Berea, Ohio, Ricky Vac and the Rock-a-Ways was formed in 1955 by singer Richard Vaculig, lead guitarist Tommy Esian, drummer Skip Hadden (who was later replaced by Jimmy Gillahan), guitarist John Magyar, pianist Paul Ticherich, and rhythm and lead guitarist Jimmy Harris. The Rock-a-Ways were noted for being one of the first mostly white bands to include an African American member (Harris).
