Biography / Administrative History
Dusty Springfield (born April 16, 1939) was an English singer known for popularizing blue‑eyed soul music, pop and dramatic ballads during the 1960s. Springfield began her career in the late 1950s, first as a member of the vocal group the Lana Sisters and later in the Springfields. She gained international success as a solo artist in late 1963 with her debut single “I Only Want to Be with You." In 1969, Springfield shifted into soul music with her album Dusty in Memphis. Springfield died March 2, 1999 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that same year.
Nancy J. Young was a fan of Dusty Springfield and began seriously researching Springfield's life and music in 2002. She was a co-founder of Let's Talk Dusty, an international Dusty Springfield fan site that helped create Dusty Day, an annual fan gathering in London, England. Young was also a college professor of English and of Women and Gender Studies at Curry College. Her dissertation is titled "The Role of Dusty Springfield and Her Music in the Identity Development of her Not Straight Fans." Young died on February 14, 2019.
