Biography / Administrative History
Dusty Springfield (April 16, 1939-March 2,1999) was a British singer known for popularizing blue‑eyed soul music, pop and dramatic ballads during the 1960s. Springfield began her career in the late 1950s, first as a member of the vocal group the Lana Sisters and later in the Springfields. She gained international success as a solo artist in late 1963 with her debut single “I Only Want to Be with You." In 1969, Springfield shifted into soul music with her album, Dusty in Memphis. Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one test pressing of "Dusty in Memphis" by Dusty Springfield and contains Springfield's handwritten notes. "Dusty in Memphis," released in March 1969, was Springfield’s first album with Atlantic Records, and it marked her stylistic shift toward soul‑inflected pop music. The test pressing provides insight into Springfield’s creative process and her transition to a more soulful sound. The collection would be of specific interest to researchers interested in Springfield's recording practices and with late‑1960s soul‑pop crossover artists in general.
