Biography / Administrative History
James Cunningham was a sound engineer who worked for Chicago's Universal Recording Corporation in the 1950s and 1960s. Universal was known for its pioneering efforts in studio acoustics and sound engineering and became one of the largest independent recording studios in the country. Notable artists who recorded at Universal include Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, The Four Seasons, Jackie Wilson, Jerry Butler, Muddy Waters, and Nat "King" Cole.
Scope and Contents
The James Cunningham Audio Recordings include four 1/4 inch audio tapes that belonged to sound engineer James Cunningham. The materials include a tape from 1972 while most of the tapes are undated. Artists include Beaver & Krause, The Chi-Lites, Gladys Knight, and Don Tweedy. The collection is arranged alphabetically by artist.
