Jay Brown (aka jfotoman) is a Cleveland-based photographer who has chronicled the independent music scenes in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania since the mid-1980s. His work has been featured on record albums and in biographies of bands like Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., the White Stripes, Guided by Voices, and the Black Keys; publications Guitar World, The New York Times Magazine, Maximum Rock’n’Roll, Alternative Press, and Magnet, as well as documentaries Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways and The Color of Noise. His photographs have been showcased in solo and group exhibitions in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Akron.

The Jay Brown Photographs contain four digital images of photography taken by Jay Brown at live performances throughout the Columbus, Ohio area from 1984 to 1986. The collection includes separate images of John Doe and Excene Cervenka of X and Henry Rollins of Black Flag at Newport Music Hall; as well as Keith Morris of Circle Jerks at Stache's & Little Brothers. The photography captures the visceral, raw, and chaotic experience of punk music that prioritizes energy over perfection.
