Scope and Contents
The Second Chance Poster is for the music venue of the same name in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The poster includes a photo by Peter Yates and features the names of national acts who performed there throughout its 23 year history.
Biography / Administrative History
The club opened as Chances Are at 516 E. Liberty Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan in August 1974, featuring weekly bands Cheap Trick, Dr. Bop and the Headliners, Masquerade, Radio King, Chopper, Head East, and Starcastle. Chances Are’s first national act was Stephen Stills in October 1974, followed by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. The club also housed the very popular Conservatory restaurant. In 1976 the name of the venue was changed to Second Chance, or “The Chance.” Many national acts continued to play there, including George Thorogood. In the spring and early summer of 1984, Second Chance closed for remodeling and then reopened in July as the Nectarine Ballroom. On April 6, 1991 the Nectarine Ballroom closed with its “Happy Trails” concert, which featured Fred “Sonic” Smith, Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, and Scott Morgan. In 1996, the Nectarine Ballroom was sold to new owners that remodeled the venue into a small dance club called Necto Nightclub.
