Scope and Contents
The Greg Kot Papers span the years 1966 to 2013, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1988 to 2005. The collection consists of Kot's research files on artists and music-related topics. Materials in the collection include clippings and copies of articles, press releases, publicity photographs, slides, interviews, and research notes used by Kot in his work as a music critic for the Chicago Tribune and contributor to national publications, Entertainment Weekly, Vibe, and Rolling Stone. The files represent over 2,000 artists from a wide range of popular music genres and topical files, such as music aid benefits, the Chicago music scene, music genres, record labels, and MTV. The collection provides insight into late twentieth and early twenty-first century music journalism.
Biography / Administrative History
Greg Kot, born March 3, 1957, is an American author, journalist, and music critic. Kot has been a music critic at the Chicago Tribune since 1990, covering popular music and music-related social, political, and business issues. He has also been a long-time contributor to Rolling Stone and has written articles for national publications, including Entertainment Weekly, Vibe, Blender, Guitar World, Details, and Request. Kot's books include Wilco: Learning How to Die, Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music, and I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers and the March Up Freedom's Highway. In addition to writing, Kot co-hosts nationally syndicated rock 'n' roll radio talk show, Sound Opinions, with Jim DeRogatis.
