Scope and Contents

The Austin City Limits / KLRU Collection spans the years 1974 to 2015, including undated materials, and consists of the records created during the process of planning, budgeting, contracting, producing, editing, distributing, and marketing the Austin City Limits television show. The majority of the collection documents the work of the show's executive and associate producers, including Bill Arhos, Dick Peterson, Lickona Watson and Casey Productions, and LickonaVision, as well as that of their teams, the associate producer/archivist, and photographer, as well as the Community Engagement Department for KLRU. The collection is organized into three series based on format: documents, photographs, and publications.

Administrative History - Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits (ACL) is the longest-running music program in television history; the only television show to have been awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts, and was recently recognized by Time magazine as one of the 10 most influential music programs of all time. It’s a show that presents a huge variety of musical styles and genres, hosting everyone from Willie Nelson to B.B. King to the Foo Fighters; and it's a show that was enshrined as a Rock and Roll Landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.

But no one knew it would be any of those things back in 1974. That was the year KLRU (then KLRN) Program Director Bill Arhos, Producer Paul Bosner, and Director Bruce Scafe hatched the idea in response to PBS’s call for original programming from its member stations. Scafe had already directed the music show The Session for WSIU in Carbondale, Illinois, while Bosner was a dedicated fan of the so-called cosmic cowboy scene in Austin, Texas. After the latter turned Arhos on to Jan Reid’s book The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock, which covered the progressive country scene, the trio came up with the idea of a TV program to showcase Austin’s diverse mix of country, blues, folk, and psychedelia. Thus, Austin City Limits (title courtesy of Bosner, who saw the sign every week when he commuted from Dallas to Austin) was born. The pilot was shot on October 14, 1974, and starred Willie Nelson, who was not yet the iconographic American music figure he would become. (B.W. Stevenson was actually taped the night before, but the recording was deemed unusable.)

In 2011, Austin City Limits moved production to ACL Live at The Moody Theater, a full-time music venue and production facility with a 2700-seat capacity and LEEDS certification for sustainable development. ACL Live at the Moody Theater is part of a full block multi-purpose development. The state-of-the-art production facility includes a comprehensive high definition production system and a direct fiber connection to KLRU’s home on the University of Texas campus.
